A post from my friend Peter. Thank you for sharing it with me this morning. It brought back such memories.
When we trekked out of Namche Bazaar, I can’t remember exactly where… if it was on the way to Khumjung, or on the way to Tengboche, or beyond… we came upon Rhododendrons like you describe. Ours weren’t in bloom (it was October) but in my mind, once my eyes recognized the flat, broad, glossy leaves I closed my eyes and imagined the entire valley’s Rhodies in full bloom.
I’ve had a soft spot for Rhodies my whole life. I didn’t know I would see them in Nepal… it was such a peaceful, wonderful surprise, and someday, I’ll be there again when they’re in bloom. I’d go all the way back without an objective, just to spend time among those flowers.
