I learned to eat meals at a table by myself comfortably, without the distraction of a book, or a screen, in October of 2009 when I was traveling in Nepal. I honed the skill in the year that followed. And I am thankful that now, a couple of years later, after enjoying many non-alone meals, I can still enjoy an empty table but for me, smiling at strangers and watching the world move around me, my journal there in case inspiration strikes, but not as a distraction from my quiet, content, now rare, aloneness.
