And always check and double check rope ends, when rapping or lowering a climber.  An accident report was posted on Tuesday to drive these points home, about an incident that occurred a couple of weeks ago in Eldorado Canyon in Colorado.  Accidents (catastrophes, eff-ups) happen, and I’m always thankful when climbers (1) survive; and (2) share their accident reports with the rest of us, to help others avoid a repeat.  Thanks, Sarah, and here’s to a speedy recovery for you and your belayer.

Also, my friend Brendan recently interviewed me for Spadout’s blog and they were quite generous with the amount of space they gave me for ranting about womens’ specific gear and my path into the industry.  When he asked me what piece of gear I couldn’t live without, I was stymied for a minute… and actually had to come back to the question.  I went through my “Gearage” in my head, and realized… it’s helmets.  I love my helmet collection (even though it’s a bit excessive) … I ski, bike, climb, and motorcycle in helmets… and if I took up a new sport for which there was a helmet on the market, gosh darn it, that might be my next purchase.

So.  A quick reminder as we all prepare for our holiday weekends of adventure.  Wear your helmet.  Make good choices out there.  And have fun.
